2020 has been... a year.
Between the COVID-19 outbreak and the coming to a head of centuries of racial injustice instigating civil unrest, it's hard not to look at the world around us as being in a state of brokenness. It can truly feel like an all encompassing "shut down". But we at NYLaughs are finding amidst all the strife is humanity showing itself in new ways and entire communities mobilizing to make change- for all that's inevitable, people are coping. We feel it will be our job going forward to support everybody's efforts to build something new and positive, and what we have in our toolbox is laughter.
For more than a decade, NYLaughs has existed and grown as an organization inspired and invigorated by our goal to spread community through laughter. With our "Laughter In The Park" series and other events that bring free comedy to the parks and public spaces of New York, we are proud to say we've been able to activate this mission and amplify our message with the help of some of the funniest voices in the comedy community and we've never felt a need to deviate from that path.
Like everyone else, we have had to re-think what and how to do what we do with the limitations of social distancing- to this end, "Laughter In The Park 2020" has been postponed and we are redefining our programming model for this summer. We see this as an opportunity for us to reinvent the idea of live comedy free to the public and have been working to expand our concept onto our existing Social Media platforms and YouTube channel. We recently partnered with The Actors Fund in "Laughter In Lockdown," a fundraiser for those in the comedy professions affected financially by the pandemic shut-downs.
We are also recognizing our platform as an ideal place to amplify Black Voices and show solidarity with communities of color by giving them a place to be heard- our fans and followers can look forward to seeing comedy activism as another way we unite and spread goodwill in our communities.
When we tell you "we're not going anywhere", we mean both that we are staying inside washing our hands and making sourdough but also that we are here for you. We are upholding our promise to make the rest of 2020 legitimately funny for you, not just funny in the sad ironic way that seems to come so easily lately. Our chins our up and we want yours to stay up too. Stay tuned for great things....
